In this tutorial, you can learn how to crochet two types of dragons using amigurumi techniques. You can use any acrylic, cotton, or blended yarn suitable for amigurumi, along with a suitable crochet hook. The author recommends using Super Saver and Comfort yarns.

Materials & Tools

  • Super Saver Yarn (2 skeins)
  • Comfort Yarn (1 skein) in red or any other color (for the head, body, tail, limbs, outer part of wings, and parts of the head).
  • Smooth yarn for embroidery of the snout and eyes.
  • Safety eyes for the toys.
  • 4mm crochet hook.
  • Toy filler.
  • Needle for attaching parts.
  • Scissors.
  • All necessary materials can be purchased here.

Stuff firmly so that the neck doesn’t bend after the head is attached. You can insert a wire frame, but make sure the ends are insulated so they don’t poke through.

Stuff the head. Half double crochets make the top of the head, stuff and shape it.

Nostrils

Insert the hook between the 6th and 7th or 7th and 8th rows (depending on how tightly you stuff it—experiment to see which looks better).

  1. Ch 1, 3 dc into the next stitch, 3 dc into the next, ss into the next. Fasten off.
    Repeat the same for the second nostril.
    The distance between the nostrils is 4 stitches. Shape the nostrils and hide the ends inside the head.

Ears (Repeat actions in parentheses to the end of the round)

Roll up the ears and sew them from the bottom. One end should be closed, the other should be turned. Make sure the ears are rolled in different directions. Attach them to the head.


Upper Wing for the Fierce Dragon

  1. Ch 8, leave a long tail for attaching.
  2. From the 2nd stitch from the hook, 7 sc (7), ch, turn.
  3. 1 sc, 3 dc in the next 3 stitches, dc, ss. Fasten off, leave a long thread.

Lower Wing for the Fierce Dragon

  1. Ch 8, leave a long tail for attaching.
  2. From the 2nd stitch from the hook, 1 sc, 5 dc, ss (7), fasten off, leave a long thread.

Eye for the Fierce Dragon

  1. KA (6)
  2. 6 sc (12)
  3. 12 dc, ss, fasten off.

Sew the eye and eyelids onto the head. Embroider the pupil.


Upper Wing for the Sleepy Dragon

  1. Ch 8, leave a long tail for attaching.
  2. From the 2nd stitch from the hook, 1 sc, 5 dc, ss, fasten off, leave a long thread.

Lower Wing for the Sleepy Dragon

  1. Ch 6, fasten off, leave a long thread.

Eye for the Sleepy Dragon

  1. KA (6), ss, fasten off.

Sew the eye and eyelids onto the head. Attach the pupil.

Assembling the Dragon

Fold the body in half and sew up the back. The height of the back ridge decreases from the wide part to the tip. Attach contrasting yarn to the tail’s tip. Crochet sc, dc, sc, ss. Repeat until the end. Continue with sc for a few rounds, then stitch the wings in place.
